Time of Emergence for Altimetry‐Based Significant Wave Height Changes in the North Atlantic

Satellite observations of significant wave height (Hs) have recently reached 30 years continuous record. Is this length sufficient to detect the effect anthropogenically forced climate change on trends? Wave decadal variability is influenced by a combination internal and caused both anthropogenic natural forcing. Using statistical model derive Hs from sea level pressure field exploiting ERA-5 reanalysis data as well 80 members Community Earth System Model v2 large ensemble, we show that, over North Atlantic (NA), altimetry-based trends are mostly variability. This suggests that changes computed satellite era not yet controlled change. Starting 1993, date emergence, defined when signal becomes dominant variability, later than 2050 for in NA.
